昨日の夜はCristina主催で家でInternational Polytical Analysisの勉強会をした。
このクラスは授業中は政治的に言いたいことのある人（主に中近東、インド出身）が発言を独占してしまって、他大多数にとっては少々うんざりすることが多かったけど、昨日はCrisitnaの人選がよく、ためになる&INSEADの国際性を最もいかした面白い5時間だった（なんと夜の9時に始めて夜中の2時終了！）

面子は、
Rahul・・・インドBombay出身。多くのインド人が非常にopinionatedなのに対してとてもneutralな視野を持っている。
Raluca・・・ルーマニア出身、政治にはうとい方。

ここからはHousemate。
Cristina・・・台湾系ブラジル人。ブラジルでは世界史の授業がなかったらしく（古代エジプトなど古代史はやったと言っていたけど）ほとんど世界史、政治音痴。勉強会は彼女が危機感を持って言い出しっぺ。
Jean-Christophe・・・フランス人。普段The EconomistやFinancial Timesを熱心に読んでるだけあって欧米のことについては博識。他の地域（特にアジア）の知識は薄い。
Adam・・・アメリカ人。わりと政治的にactiveな部類に属するらしく、日本を含めたアジアのことも比較的よく知っている。
私・・・日本人。大学ではInternational Relations専攻、ずっとTimeを購読していたので（国内政治にはうといけど）国際政治はそれなりに知っている方。ただ、ヨーロッパ、中南米、アフリカといった日本と関係の薄い地域の知識は薄い。

勉強会は授業で使用したcaseやreadingの中から分担して前もってそれぞれがポイントをまとめ、他の人に説明するという方式。
Jean-Christopheが複雑に入り組んだEUの組織を説明し、Adamがブッシュ政権内のNeo-Conservatistの主張を解説し、、、とそれぞれのbackgroundをいかしたINSEADな時間で、授業中には恥ずかしくていまさら聞けないような無知な質問も自由にできて面白かった。

今日は朝の8:30からCorporate Renewalの試験、ぶっ通しで５時間。

通常「書く」試験は４時間なのが５時間になったのは教授の「non-nativeにとって４時間は足らない」という配慮からだったが、４時間だろうと５時間だろうと足らないものは足らない。結局いつものように時間切れでしまった。

月曜のMacroeconomicsとInternational Polytical Analysisが終われば、１週間のBreak!

P3の授業が早くも全て終わった。

MacroeconomicsのAntonio Fatásという教授の授業の分かりやすさは最高で、授業最終回の昨日は拍手が鳴り止まなくスタンディングオーベーションが出るほどだった。彼は来年からMBA Dean（学長）になる。

INSEADはHarvardのようにcase creating machineになろうとしていて教授陣にもresearch & case writingを要求しているので、高いレベルのresearchもしつつ生徒から高い評価を得るようなteachingをするのは相当に大変だろうと思う。教授陣はMBA Programmeの顔なので、学校も引き止めるためには相当額のサラリーを払っていると聞く。

何はともあれ授業最終回の評価シートではAntonio Fatásには全て"5"をつけた。

そして、今日はCorporate Renewalのクラスの最終回。私は授業の内容は前職の組織の問題、今後のキャリアの方向など深く考えさせられることが多くて好きだったけど、Morten Hansenという教授がどうしても苦手だった。
Class Participation 50%という授業中の発言が最も大きく成績を左右するこのクラスで、発言をしようと「当ててくれ、当ててくれ」と訴えんばかりのclass matesの勢いに圧倒されてそのcompetitiveな雰囲気になじめず、MortenのBCG(Boston Consulting Group)時代を彷彿させる鋭い切り込みとシャープな語り口、真っ直ぐに見据えた眼力が怖かった。萎縮していた、という言葉がふさわしい。

でも今日授業の終わりに彼が言ったことを聞きながら、「あー、恥かいてもいいからもっとクラスで発言すればよかったなー」と思った。覚えておきたいので、今できるかぎり思い出しながら書くと・・・

You, as a leader....
Be ambitious. You are all ambitious. That's why you are here. It's OK to be ambitious. You are never going to be good to great without being ambitious.
Focus on a few core things. I don't know any leaders who are good at many things. But, they are extremely focused on a few core things. It is very difficult not to do many things, but identify what you really excel.
Nothing but excellence. You are all extremely talented. Seek nothing but excellence.
Own rewords: $, recognition... . Everyone is looking for the rewards, monetary rewards, recognition... It may be something that motivates most of you. And, it is OK to seek them.

But... do not forget to be compationate to others. I am doing this because I want to be a part of growing future leaders. I am sure, in 5 years, we will see someone from this class in a news article for the great achievement he has done in business. Then, I can say, "I taught him."
Great leaders can help others and make a difference. I belive those people should come from the place like this.

I will reiterate, you are all talented. I enjoyed teaching you tremendously, and I will remember each one of you. I will always remember you because this was my very first class at INSEAD. Thank you, and best of luck.

昨日のCorporate Renewalのクラスとそれに続くCocktail Partyでは2人のGuest Speakerが来た。

1人目は"Seven Years of Tibet"や"Cliffhanger"、"Mt. Everest"など山をテーマとした映画を撮影する映画監督/登山家のDavid Breashears。
Corporate Renewalのクラスで"Mt. Everest"というHBSのケースを取り上げたので（極限状態でのleadershipというテーマ）その延長でのゲストだった。

雄弁でよく構成されていて"buz word"を散りばめた企業家のスピーチに慣れているので、Davidの感覚的で、頭よりむしろ心に訴えかけるとも言えるような話はものすごく新鮮だった。変な言い方だけど世の中ビジネスマン中心に回ってるんじゃないんだ、と思った。
容赦ない私たちMBA学生の「（Everest頂上付近で息絶えた）友人の死体の横に45分も付き添っていたのはなぜか？」というような残酷な質問に答える時は、目から涙がこぼれるんじゃないかと思ってひやひやした。

2人目はDavidとは全く打って変わってLVMH Group（Louis Vitonをはじめとした高級ブランドを数多く所有するフランスの巨大企業グループ）のKrugというChampaigneブランドのCEO。

ステイタスシンボルとなったDom Pérignonやオシャレな都会の若者のイメージが定着したCristalというライバルブランドに比べて一部のワイン愛好家のみに好まれるブランドとなってしまったKrugをどのようにして再生させるか、というBrand Managementがテーマ。
Luxury Goods業界はいかにimageを売るか、がキーとなるので対象とする顧客層の比較（どんな車に乗ってどの地区に住んでいるかetc.）など本当に面白くて飽きないPresentationだった。

その後はもちろん高級Champagne Krugで乾杯のCocktail Party。
本格的に山に登ったことなんぞない私が山に登りたいと思い、Luxury Goodsにはてんで興味がない私がLuxury Goodsのマーケティングになるのも面白いかな、と思い、忙しい1日だった。

今週金曜と来週月曜が試験なので、焦り始めてきた（遅いけど）。
International Political Analysisの試験は何とClosed Book,　ノートなど一切持ち込み不可。
以下、去年の試験の一部。苦痛の3時間になりそう・・・

ESSAY QUESTIONS: 70 points, 35 points each.

Please answer TWO AND ONLY TWO of the following essay questions. In providing an answer, please MAKE REFERENCE TO THE COURSE READINGS. Each essay SHOULD BE NO LONGER THAN FOUR PAGES IN LENGTH!


1. What are the fundamental tenets of the realist theory of international relations? What, if anything, so far supports the realist theorist John Mearsheimer’s claim that levels of international conflict would rise following the end of the Cold War? How likely is it that the future evolution of international relations will substantiate his analysis and what would this likely mean for international security and the international economy?

2. Which objective should a state in transition choose to pursue first, democratization or economic liberalization, and why? To what extent should the choice depend on the characteristics of the particular state? Please support your answer with examples.

3. Western Europe is the politically most highly integrated region in the world. What accounts for Europe’s ‘specificity’ or ‘exceptionalism’ in this respect? How well grounded in your view are fears that in the future, as the European Union expands eastwards, the integration process may come to a stop or reverse?

4. Please assess the prospects for a peaceful resolution of the conflicts between China, Taiwan and the USA over the political status of Taiwan OR between North Korea, the USA and the other powers of Northeast Asia over North Korea’s nuclear programme.

5. Francis Fukuyama and Samuel Huntington are conducting a debate about terrorism. What would each say about its root causes and possible solutions? Please use your knowledge of international relations theory and specific examples to make the strongest possible case for their respective positions and then explain which you ultimately find more persuasive.

6. Ethan Kapstein argues that the ‘American century has just begun’, Charles Kupchan by contrast that ‘America’s unipolar moment is unlikely to last the [current] decade’ (i.e. beyond 2010). Which of these two analyses is, in your view, the more credible and why?

7. The international community, especially vocal leaders of the World Bank and G7, has sought to accelerate the process of debt relief for both poor and developing countries. Please identify the political and economic arguments in favour of debt relief and those against it and explain which position you find most persuasive and why.

Lunchにカフェテリアで10人集まっても全員国籍が違うのが当たり前のINSEADに半年いて、その多様性にはすっかり慣れてしまってもはや出身国を意識することもなくなっている生活の中で、一番違いを感じるのはsense of humor。

イギリス人のちょっとブラックなユーモアはフランス人の皮肉っぽいユーモアと全然違うし、アメリカ人のユーモアとも全然違う。ただ日本人はもっぱら身近な話題をネタにすることが多いのに対して欧米人はstory telling的なものが多い気がする（『ギリシャのとある小島に住んでいるおじいさんが〜』というようなやつ）。
面白いジョークがE-mailで回るのは、仕事中に『ドラえもんの本当の最終回』のメールが回ってくる日本と一緒。

皆が大爆笑するような話の面白さがちっともわからず目を白黒させるようなことが多い私もこれには笑った→Axis of Just as Evil
典型的なstory tellingのjokeだけれど、果たして皆さんは笑えるでしょうか？

16 things it took me 50 years to learn　これは私はあまり笑えなかった。

なお、日本といえば東京以外知らないのが普通なのでHousemateのJean-Christopheに関西の「ボケとツッコミ」を説明しようと思ったけれど難しすぎて断念した。東京の人にさえ説明できなかったのだから英語で説明するのは不可能に近い。
